The AGT gene encodes angiotensin (also known as angiotensinogen), and SNPs in AGT have been implicated in risk for hypertension and related disorders, such as heart disease and pre-eclampsia. Many polymorphisms in the AGT gene are known, though only a few are known to have medical consequences.
Studied SNPs of the AGT gene include:
- rs699, also known as M235T
- rs5051, known as A-6G, often in tight linkage with rs699
- rs4762, known as T174M
- rs3889728, known as G1035A
The AGXT gene is also sometimes called AGT so be sure not to confuse them.
