Polycystic ovary syndrome

From SNPedia
(Redirected from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome)

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common yet complex endrocrine disorder affecting perhaps 5 to 10% of all women of reproductive age. PCOS can cause reduced fertility in women and is also associated with obesity. Wikipedia

Various genes are associated with higher risk for PCOS or for endocrine abnormalities characteristic of PCOS:

  • LHCGR (luteinizing hormone/choriogonadotropin receptor)
  • HSD17B5 (now AKR1C3, aldo-keto reductase family 1, member C3 (3-alpha hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, type II))
    • This gene was reported to be involved in PCOS, but a 2008 publication did not support this association. [PMID 17940109]
