Dopamine receptor D4 is associated with various mental disorders [PMID 25287955], particularly ADHD. It has several noted variations:

  • A 48-base pair VNTR in exon 3 (not assayed on most DNA chips)
  • C-521T in the promoter (rs1800955)
  • -616 C/G (rs747302)
  • 13-bp deletion of bases 235 to 247 in exon 1 (rs554375713; not assayed on most DNA chips)
  • 12-bp repeat in exon 1 (not assayed on most DNA chips)
  • Val194Gly (rs1800443)
  • A polymorphic tandem duplication of 120 bp (not assayed on most DNA chips)

There are an estimated 85+ DRD4 alleles ([PMID 12808433], primarily based on the 48bp exon 3 VNTR. To our knowledge it is not possible to assess which alleles are present in an individual based solely on microarray data from any of the major DTC testing companies.

Differences in sexual desire can be attributed to genetic variances; a 2006 article with more speculation than data [PMID 16534505]

DRD4 mating blog discussion

In songbirds, variations are claimed to affect 'personality' and curiosity [1], but this blog post casts serious doubts on that conclusion.

The gene DRD4 has been sometimes called "wanderlust gene"ː Is There Really a 'Wanderlust Gene'? A study shows this gene might have some impacts on the habituation, adaptation or local site selection of black swansː "Variation at the DRD4 locus is associated with wariness and local site selection in urban black swans". [PMID 26653173].
