In the Nature article Telomerase reactivation reverses tissue degeneration in aged telomerase-deficient mice, scientists turned off the TERT gene in mice to cause accelerated aging. When some of these mice had the TERT gene re-activated, the artificial aging process was reversed. However there is some concern that the TERT gene may also aid in the growth of cancer cells, and it remains unclear whether this could lead to treatment which would be effective in reversing aging in organisms with normal TERT genes.
