Glutathione S-transferase (GST) theta 1 (GSTT1) is a member of a superfamily of proteins that catalyze the conjugation of reduced glutathione to a variety of electrophilic and hydrophobic compounds.
While testing for null alleles in GSTM1 seems sufficient for Caucasians and Oriental subjects, the most promising target SNPs for GSTT1 association studies in African-American and Hispanic subjects may be those causing the amino acid changes Asp43Asn, Thr65Met, Thr104Pro and the single nucleotide deletion in exon 4.
