Premenstrual dysphoric disorder
From SNPedia
Affecting perhaps 5% of women experiencing menstrual cycles, premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a clinically distinct affective disorder characterized by recurrent and distressing mood and behavioral symptoms during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle.
Although twin studies indicate a significant (perhaps 35%) heritability for PMDD, few genetic variants with large effect have been reproducibly associated with the condition, yet ~50 SNPs with quite minor effects have been published. Among the better studied variants (albeit in studies with surprisingly few women) are:
- rs6295, in the serotonin 1a receptor HTR1A gene
- certain combinations of SNPs in the 4th intron of the ESR1 gene [PMID 17599809]
