A 2014 publication reports that carriers of one or two copies of the "clade 2 haplotype", marked by the rs737280(G) allele of a SNP apparently tagging a haplotype of the adjacent ALDH2 gene, showed a 2- to 5-fold increase in Parkinson's disease risk when exposed to higher amounts of pesticide exposure. No such increase was seen in rs737280(A) individuals, and, independent of pesticide exposure, there was no association between rs737280 and risk for Parkinson's disease. This was a relatively small study, and given also the difference in rs737280 allele frequency between ethnic groups, it will be interesting to see if this study can be confirmed in larger, and different, populations.[PMID 24491970]
